With a tower of a 65 m and with an English Gothic style, the Cathedral Our Lady of Lourdes, in Canela, never goes unnoticed. Known as Cathedral of stone, it is grandiose, imposing and, not incidentally, one of the most visited sights of the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
The walls of the Cathedral are coated with basalt and on the top there is a carillon with 12 bronze bells. In its interior, there are several works of art, such as the altar carved in wood by the Uruguayan Julio Tixe, and the paintings of the Via Sacra made of wood and clay by Pablo Orona Herrera.
The altar shows the panels “Apparition of Our Lady”, “Allegory of the Angels”, and “Annunciation”, painted by the gaucho artist Marciano Schmitz, who also signs the crests of the four evangelists.
At night, the colored lights on the facade produce a spectacle.
Take the opportunity to visit the many shops and restaurants nearby.
It may snow in June and July. Wear appropriate clothes.
