Inaugurated in 1910, the then harbour area of Rio de Janeiro, Mauá Square soon became one of the most important places in the city center. The building that housed the newspaper company “A Noite” (The Night), the first skyscraper in Latin America was built in this Square.
In 1960’s the construction of the Perimetral elevated motorway crossed over the Square, affecting the pedestrian’s movement and the view of Guanabara Bay. The Square revitalization started some years ago with the Perimetral being demolished, some motorways being closed and with the construction of the LRT and two important Museums – Museu da Arte do Rio and the Museum of Tomorrow.
Since then, Mauá Square became one of the most important tourist attractions in the center of this wonderful city. The Square gathers thousands of visitors that are willing to visit the attractions and enjoy the beautiful view of the Guanabara Bay and Niterói, an adjacent city.
