The Xingó Archaeology Museum, from the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), is located in the city of Canindé do São Francisco, in the State of Sergipe. There, you have the opportunity to learn a little about the archaeological heritage of the region.
The Museum began to be organized in 1988, with the beginning of the construction of Xingó Hydroelectric Power Plant. From that moment, it was initiated a large archaeological rescue project in the areas that would be flooded by the reservoir of the power plant.
Among the elements found in the region and exposed in the Museum there is lithic material (stone tools), ceramic and almost intact burials – among them a skeleton of almost 9 thousand years.
Opened in 2000, the Museum exhibits its collection consisting of more than 50 thousand pieces and traces, and also carries out educational activities aiming to raise awareness about the importance of preserving and valuing the cultural heritage.
