Manaus
Manaus is a charming and cultural city. The green Amazon Forest, the dark waters of Rio Negro, the muddy waters of Solimões River, exotic local cuisine, diverse architecture, and very welcoming people are some of the city’s treasures. One visit is all it takes to fall in love with the capital of Amazonas State.
Also known as Paris of the Tropics because of its intense modernization during the Amazon Rubber Boom (a period of great economic and social growth in Brazil), Manaus is located in the heart of the Amazon Forest. The city inherited beautiful buildings from the days of the Rubber Boom, and they were built with fine materials imported from Europe. The Amazonas Theater is the one that stands out, though, with a colorful dome made with 36 thousand enameled ceramic tiles.
There are plenty of wonderful attractions in Manaus. When you go for a visit, you must experience, for example, the downtown area of the city. Walking around the streets, you will be able to explore its urban environment, which tells a lot about local history. Largo de São Sebastião Square is a popular tourist spot where you will see the Abertura dos Portos Monument, the famous Amazonas Theater, lots of handicraft shops, and art galleries.

Traditional local handicrafts
Adolpho Lisboa Municipal Market is one of the main tourist attractions in Manaus. It is the ideal place if you are looking for handicrafts, typical food, and a little of the local culture. At the Modern Manaus Market, on the other hand, several typical products, such as fish, spices, and local fruit, can be purchased.
Since it is the capital of Amazonas State, Manaus is the main metropolis in the region and the natural gateway for those who want to visit the Forest. Boats are the main transportation to the rainforest hotels, as well as to see the meeting of the waters of Rio Negro and Solimoes Rivers, to observe Amazon River dolphins in Anavilhanas, and to visit places such as Moon Beach (Praia da Lua).
Tours along broad rivers or narrow streams also provide contact with the riverside communities and the opportunity to experience indigenous influence at its best. A great feature is the local gastronomy and its exotic dishes. Tacaca soup is one of the most popular with tourists. The soup is cooked with tucupi (juice extracted from a specific variety of wild cassava), dried shrimp, tapioca starch, and jambu leaves.
When it comes to fish, the most famous dishes are baked, stewed, or fried tambaqui, brycon, jaraqui, peacock bass, and pirarucu. For dessert, we recommend local fruit, such as açai, araça, cupuassu, soursop, buriti, and tapereba. These local delicacies can be found in many restaurants around the city, on Ponta Negra Beach, and even at food stands around the city streets.
