Vitória
One of three capital cities in Brazil located on an island, Vitória has a rich history and fascinating culture. Visitors to the region will be amazed by all the incredible man-made attractions and unique natural beauty.
The island city of Vitória is the capital city in the state of Espírito Santo. It is a place of stunning beaches as well as historic and cultural attractions, many of which are located in the central region of the city, such as the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Church of Saint Gonsalo Garcia, and the Carlos Gomes Theater. The seat of the state government is Anchieta Palace, located at the entrance to Cidade Alta, one of the oldest neighborhoods in the downtown area.
There are some important buildings and structures in the city, such as the imposing Third Bridge, which connects the town of Vila Velha to the northern part of the island. There are also lots of bars, restaurants, and nightclubs to please everyone. Some of the locals’ favorite locations include the Bermuda Triangle, in the neighborhood of Praia do Canto, and Seven Street (Rua Sete), in the downtown area.

Brazilian clay stew pot production line
The neighborhoods of Ilha das Caieiras and Curva da Jurema are renowned for their restaurants on the waterfront, where visitors can try the traditional Moqueca Capixaba (a typical fish or seafood stew). This dish is usually prepared in handmade clay stew pots, whose production visitors can experience at the Goiabeiras Association of Potters. The warehouse that hosts the association was completely renovated in 2011, and visitors who wish to purchase one of the stew pots can do it there.
Camburi Beach is six kilometers long and the only local beach on the mainland. The neighborhood has excellent infrastructure and the beach is considered one of the best sailing spots in Brazil. The City Hall frequently organizes cultural events there.
Praça dos Namorados e dos Desejos (a city square in the neighborhood of Praia do Canto that means a place for couples and desires) has a large promenade where lots of people go walking or jogging. Not too far away is the Yacht Club, from where boats participating in the International Deep Sea Fishing Tournament set out to sea. Visitors to the neighborhoods of Ilha do Frade and Ilha do Boi can enjoy wonderful mini-beaches with short strips of sand and crystal-clear waters.
Congo bands (folkloric local bands that play the congo musical genre) are part of the local culture. These bands are formed by men and women who perform in honor of Saint Benedict by dancing, playing drums, and playing the casaca (a scraping percussion instrument of indigenous origin). Casacas are currently sold to tourists as souvenirs.
Vitória is a charming and peaceful city that warmly welcomes its visitors. Local weather is very pleasant and tourists can visit the whole island in just a few days.
