Boa Vista

Boa Vista is a planned city that contains wide streets and numerous attractions. The capital city in the state of Roraima will charm tourists with local hospitality and a unique atmosphere.

Boa Vista was the first settlement in Roraima, a federal territory promoted to the category of State in 1988. Located on the right bank of Rio Branco, the main river in the state, the capital had its start in the village of Nossa Senhora do Carmo. The main evidence of the city’s past, with neoclassical-style buildings that remind visitors of its heyday, lie in the areas close to the river.

There is strong indigenous influence in local cuisine. Dishes such as damorida, a fish-based broth, paçoca with bananas, roast beef that is ground and then mixed with flour, and bodó fish pie, a baked dish made by mixing armored catfish meat and egg whites, really tickle the visitors’ taste buds. Spices such as pepper and tucupi, a sauce extracted from wild cassava roots and used in several Amazonian recipes, are also very popular in local dishes.

The city is home to the Maracá Ecological Station. In addition to being a protected forest area, it contains species such as jaguars, giant otters, and howler monkeys. The Velia Coutinho Handicraft and Tourism Center is also located in Boa Vista. The center includes handicraft stores, an exhibit hall, and a covered stage for shows. The Gold Miners Monument, the city’s main statue, is located on Civic Center Square and pays homage to the workers who extracted gold in the region back in the days when the activity was allowed.

An attraction that everyone must visit is Rio Branco Park, a tourist complex built on the banks of the Rio Branco river. The Park includes several attractions that make the place a great option for the whole family, such as the Edileusa Lóz Viewpoint, which is 120 meters high, the Selvinha Amazônica, a mini forest with elements of the Amazon wildlife and vegetation, a pond in the shape of a half-moon, an artificial beach, a pier, sports courts, boardwalks, and two artistic murals.

Only 230 km from Boa Vista lies Mount Roraima, one of the most ancient mountains in the world. It is located on the border between Brazil, Guyana, and Venezuela. With an altitude of 2,875m and a landscape sculpted by rivers, waterfalls, and rock formations, the mountain is accessible from the Venezuelan side of the border.

The city of Boa Vista does not have a view to the ocean, but it does have a river. And if it has a river, it means that it has a shore. The Taumanan waterfront is a special place to admire other attractions that the city has to offer, such as Macuxi Bridge and Praia Grande beach. It is also the ideal place to enjoy a beautiful sunrise and the breeze of the wonderful Rio Branco river.
