Porto Velho

Those who wish to discover new places and be amazed by lush natural landscapes without giving up the comforts of an urban center will find that Porto Velho is the ideal destination for them.

The region where the capital city in the state of Rondônia is located was explored by people from several parts of Brazil in the early 19th century for the construction of the Madeira-Mamoré Railway, which not only provided the capital with a unique biography, but also combined several different cultures. In 2006, the railway was added to the Brazilian Cultural Heritage List by the Ministry of Culture. It has since become one of the most visited attractions in the region and is home to a Museum where it is possible to see some of the equipment and machinery used back in the day. The Three Water Tanks (Três Caixas D’Água) in the center of the city were imported all the way from the USA and are one of the symbols of the city, so much so that you can see them on the official city flag.

The best way to experience and appreciate Porto Velho’s history is by visiting its rich and authentic historic and cultural attractions, such as the traditional Ivan Marrocos House of Culture, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Rondonia Memory Palace Museum.

However, there is more to Porto Velho than just culture. The region, home to fantastic natural paradises, has extremely rich biodiversity. The city is surrounded by the Amazon forest, and lies on the south bank of Madeira River. Visitors can take boat tours to see river dolphins and visit local  waterfalls and parks, such as the Porto Velho Natural Park and the Dr José Adelino da Silva Circuit Park. Not too far away lies Lago do Cuniã Extractive Reserve, a sustainable protected area where visitors can observe Amazonian species such as the pirarucu, one of the largest freshwater fish in Brazil, and black caimans.

Just like other cities in the North region of the country, Porto Velho is a great place to enjoy exotic flavors and try typical dishes, one of which is Tacacá, whose ingredients include shrimp, tapioca starch, and jambu leaves, which cause the sensation of numbness in your mouth. Another typical dish is the Caldeirada, a fish stew prepared with local fish, especially tambaqui and peacock bass. And since the cupuaçu fruit is so common in the region, you must try some cupuaçu pie. All these delicacies can be purchased at the Central Market, where you will also find regional products, local handicrafts, typical food, and natural home remedies.

The capital of Rondonia is also a great place to enjoy some music and learn typical local dances. You should check out the traditional Arraial Flor do Maracujá Festival, which usually takes place between the months of June and July. During the festivities, everyone can enjoy some Brazilian square dancing and boi-bumbá performances, two great representations of Brazilian folklore.

The welcoming people of Porto Velho captivate everyone who pays a visit to the city. With activities for the whole family, it is a wonderful destination.
