Belonging to the municipality of Angra dos Reis, Ilha Grande is one of the largest islands that make up the Costa Verde tourist region in Rio de Janeiro. Altogether, there are 187 islands scattered along the state coast. Ilha Grande has an area of 192 square kilometers and its lush vegetation, consisting of native Atlantic Forest, is safeguarded by several wildlife and environmental protection agencies.
One of the beaches that stand out is Lopes Mendes Beach, which has already been voted one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in Brazil by Traveler’s Choice Awards. In total, there are more than 100 beaches with different infrastructure in Ilha Grande, including beaches with all the necessary amenities you might need, as well as deserted beaches, and even small strips of sand that are visible and accessible only during low tide.

Vermelha (Red Beach)
Praia Vermelha has blue-green crystal-clear waters. A favorite with divers, it is usually the starting point for underwater expeditions, especially to shipwrecks around Ilha Grande Bay.
Enseada de Araçatiba (Araçatiba Cove)
With fine golden sand, the paradise beach of Araçatiba Cove has lots of almond trees under which visitors will be able to relax. Its remarkable crystal-clear waters have a comfortable temperature for most of the year, which makes it a wonderful place to go for a swim.
Snorkeling is one of the favorite activities with tourists, who can observe the amazing local marine wildlife species, such as turtles and starfish. Diving equipment can be hired on the beach or at the inn where the tourist is staying.
